What type of rodent could this be that loves to eat bread?
So about 2 months ago I discovered a hole outside at the corner of the house leading to under the house near the kitchen and I've seen what I think are chipmunks scurrying into that hole when we open the kitchen door to go outside. I have also hear something scurrying under the bathtub which is behind the wall of the kitchen. Whatever it is I only thought was in the walls and didn't have access to the interior of the house. Guess I was wrong b/c over the past week I've had holes mysteriously appearing at the unopened end of loaf bread and bagels which sits in a large bowl on top of the microwave. Whatever it is doesn't touch fruit, crumbs on the floor and can't get in the cabinets but is eating the bread...and lots of it. A rat? A chipmunk? Our cat has been interested in *something* under the stove and dishwasher since a little after we moved in back in the spring but he hasn't caught anything. Haven't seen any droppings. Any suggestions on what it is and what we need to catch it?
From your description sounds much like a rat. They will take up residence anywhere. Chipmunks return to their burrows. Cats are good at mice, bad at rats although they will pursue [stalk, be interested in] them. Your description sounds like a wood rat and they are tenacious. Surprised you have not heard them gnawing at night.
Peanut butter on a rat trap but they are good of robbing the trap without getting caught. So, put P butter on the trap near the bread without actually setting the trap, and again. The rat will get careless and then you set it. No more rat.
Tips For Economical Kitchen Remodeling
You should make a plan and stick with it. This might include aspects such as the cost, style, colors and space arrangements. Once you have settled on a plan, don't make changes that require redoing portions of the project. Remodeling required a great deal of pre-planning and preparation. If you keep changing your mind, you will almost certainly blow your budget.
Take time to collect ideas for a time before developing your plan. Visit remodeling websites. Check out your local home center. Purchase magazines and books with ideas that you might use in your own plan. If you visit open houses, you might see ideas that you can incorporate in your own home.
DIY where you can. If you have carpentry skills or can follow directions for completing some of the projects, you may be able to save money in the project. It is better to pay a little more if you don't know how to do the task. If you need to do demolition, that may be something that you can do as a family project. If friends are willing and able to help during parts of the project, take advantage.
Get a reputable contractor. Searching some of the review sites that are plentiful will help you find a contractor who has a reputation that is impeccable. Ask for references and check the references before hiring. The contractor should be licensed and bonded to perform the work that you need accomplished. Under no circumstances should you pay for the job before you are satisfied with the results.
Shop at outlet stores. When you look for bargains on some of the larger items, you may be surprised at the price savings you can obtain. Another area of cost savings is in freight. Finding free delivery for larger items is not too difficult if you are willing to make the time to search. You can look at auction sites, sales and estate sales if you have a plan in place and are willing to spend the time looking.
Measure twice, cut once. For those parts of the project that you are doing on your own, one of the easiest tips to overlook is to beware of spoiling materials due to improper cutting or placement in your remodeled kitchen. Areas where improper measurements can be particularly expensive include placement of kitchen cabinets, granite counter tops and even kitchen appliances such as a dishwasher or microwave.
Whether you go for a complete renovation of your kitchen space or simply place a corner sink and counter in a different location, these tips will be helpful. You can stay focused on your plan to avoid spending more money on the project than you had intended. Finally, finish what you start so that you can enjoy your remodeling kitchen area.
