Legal question: what proof/receipt is required for cost to repair gas pump damaged by consumer at gas station?

I accidentally pulled away from the gas pump at a gas station and the top of the pump became disconnected. The manager of the gas station repaired the gas pump and called me with "his price to repair", but will not give me any kind of receipt or proof of his cost. What kind of proof is he obligated to provide?

I take it his price sounds too high?

You are responsible to pay the reasonable cost of repairs. If you think he is too high, you can simply refuse to pay until he provides you with an independent estimate of the repair cost. Of course, you can't refuse forever: Eventually he could sue you for the damages. However, in doing so, he is going to have to demonstrate to the court the cost of the repairs, so he may as well just show you in the first place.

Send him a letter stating that you accept responsibility for the damages, but that you will only pay upon receipt of an independent, verifiable estimate (or invoice, if the work has already been done) of the cost of repairs.

Last thought: Is there enough money involved here to get your insurance company involved?
