SIGN THE PETITION! PASS THE
PETITION! Petition
update 5/19/06
We have collected 2,600
signatures so far, this puts us at 68% of the petition goal
to separate from Unit 1 and form a new IT bargaining unit.
Our goal of a 40% reduction
in current dues is still very firm. I have met with
potential labor representatives and support staff to get
commitments to start work for the new unit as soon as Public
Employee Relations Board (PERB) approves the petition. This
staff will provide immediate expertise in the areas of
representation, classification, research, information
technology, bargaining, legal, communications and office
support.
Worksite representation will
be provided by the current IT stewards. Any steward
supporting the petition drive will have their steward status
immediately transferred to the new bargaining unit.
Maintaining the 40% dues
reduction, will in part, be possible because the new unit
will use a representation model as opposed to the organizing
model SEIU Local 1000 is currently using. "Organizing" is
very costly, as seen by the recent dues increase and
apparently not very effective in getting salary increases
and benefits.
I met informally with a PERB
representative on the 18th to discuss a number of issues.
One that is of immediate importance is how long PERB takes
to process the petitions. The representative stated that
they make validating the petitions a high priority and they
should only take a couple of weeks to validate the petition
signatures. PERB does this so that the State is not in
limbo as to who is representing the employees. |

The current contract and its
protections should cover the new unit until we have
negotiated a new contract with the State.
Please print the
attached mail-back petition, sign and mail ASAP.
Members and Non-members are encouraged to sign this
petition. We need the petition drive completed before a new
contract is signed by the Unit 1 bargaining team.
